A seller of a 98 Civic LX that I will be looking at tomorrow says that
the rear driver's window does not work "although the motor sounds fine".

I've not worked on any window problems with my previous cars.

The manual indicates that there is a Power window motor and also a
regulator involved..

Anyone with experience with this kind of problem ?

Maybe stripped gears on motor or bad regulator ?

Could be either. I've had a window fail on two different cars. On one it
was the gear pack (which requires replacing the motor) and on the other it
was the regulator. You have to take the assembly out of the door to know
for sure. This is not a difficult DIY job. The motor and regulator are
usually under $100 each at AutoZone or similar FLAPS.

The driver's window is a pretty basic functionality for a car. I would be
inclined to look deeper into this car and see what else has been neglected
or left unrepaired. My guess is that unless it is incredibly cheap, its not
going to be a desirable car to buy.
