Hi
I have a sloppy shifter in my 98 civic, well I just bought it last
week, figured it could just be the bushings in the shifter that have
worn out, no big deal.

Anyhow, it goes into gear fine but I almost have to find the gears
myself. When its in gear there is alot of side to side play in the
shifter, like the play you get when its in neutral, but only a little
front to back play when in gear.

Someone told me it could be the guides in the shifter have worn out.

Anyway I figure its just a cheap fix. Is it the guides? or could it
be bushings or what?

Im thinking if I get a short shifter it should fix everything and its
a lot cheaper then stock.

its just the bushings eh?

Some friends have told me it could be the shifter guides are worn
away... but i cant find "shifter guides" on ebay or any online parts
store.

that's because they don't exist! it's just the bushings.

when you disassemble the shifter under your car, just make sure to get all of
the old plastic bushings out. pop the new ones in and reassemble. should
take 15-20 minutes.

While your under there you can check for any loose exhaust shields. Cut them
off. They are annoying.

You can get brass bushings as well, which would make the shifter very stiff.
However, its alot harder on your trannie.

I went and ordered some Energy Shifter bushings off ebay. There's 3
bushings total. I hope they aren't too hard to change. I've never
changed bushings in a shifter before, although I had to replace a
linkage cable on my 92 accord once.

Do i need to pound these suckers into place, or should they just slip
right in?

Those probably won't be the right ones. They are the rubber bushings that go
into the shifter on the trannie side.

You need the plastic bushings from honda that go on the shifter side.

If this is like the 92 setup, most of the difficulty is that it's
directly over the exhaust pipe and cat, so you need to work around
things. Looking back, it might have been worth it to disconnect the
exhaust and move it out of the way; you be the judge when you're
underneath it.

On the 98 its not a big deal, lots of room to play with. I did it on mine
about 2 years ago.
