Erm, no.

It's the first car on the new B7 platform - which will give us the next
gen. A4. (Very different to a Golf - the B7 platform is a proper Audi
with longitudinal engine and proper 4wd.)

I thought the current gen A4s were B7? B5 was the old platform of the
old RS4 Avants, then there was the B6 which had no RS4, but introduced
the V8 N/A S4. Then there was the B7 which introduced the new round
grill (amongst other things of course) and the current RS4.

Except for the fact that they've never done this before, and
traditionally Audi launch the S ranges at least a year after the 'A'
variants have been on the market.

I hadn't realised that the B6 facelift had been designated B7.

Funnily enough, I'd have thought that the Audi reputation to exactly
the opposite of what you're saying. They're ultra reliable but a
relatively staid driving experience compared to say a Porsche, TVR or
even a BMW. So the reviews usually say anyway.
