While parked turn the front wheels as far as they will go and then look under your car where the axle meets the wheel (check right wheel first since you hear the sound on right turns). There will be a rubber boot (cone shaped); the boot holds grease that lubricates the ball joint. Over time the boots dry rot and eventually split, which will let in dirt and water. Both Hondas I've owned have done this (Right wheel on both cars, probably because you make more right turns than left) . ...I believe it happened somewhere around 80-85k miles. If it's broken... (my mechanic told me)...you have two choices: have the CV joint replaced (It's been a while since I've had it replaced so I don't remember the cost but it's not cheap...maybe around $350 labor and $150 - 200 for the parts, that may be for only one axle; call a repair shop or dealership and they will tell you. Second option is to drive it until you can't stand the noise anymore. On my first Honda I took the second option because once the damage is done there's nothing you can do about it and I was in school so money was tight. I waited 2 years before I replaced the joint. I asked the mechanic what the risk of taking option 2 was and he said that eventually the ball joint will dry out and the wheel will freeze up but that the noise would really bother me before that happened. On the second Honda (the one I still drive) I caught the split boot before damage was done and just replaced the boots. Replacing only the boot is still expensive because the labor is almost the same as replacing the whole axle but you're not paying for a new CV joint. If replacing, I would only replace the bad one. The left boot on both of my cars never broke and my first Honda was 12 years old before I sold it and my current Honda is 10. |
