The oil filter on my 2005 Accord (4 cyl) is tucked away in a way that
whenever I remove it, oil gets over everything. Does anyone have a suggestion about how to do this without making a mess? Many thanks in advance, -Ben |

I have saved bunches of these from 24 packs of Coke & then pull off the perforated ends to get the above dimensions. They are used to separate the top layer of Coke cans from the bottom layer in the square boxes. (Not used in the long "refrigerator" style boxes.) Slide the end above the filter mounting plate once the filter is a little loose, and direct the oil to your pan by making a slight "U" shape. Unscrew and let 'er rip. There is actually a Honda tool for the 4 cylinder that attached with a magnet and does the same thing. This works on my 6 cylinder '04 Accord and '04 MDX, and no cleanup, just toss. Since the paper is coated, there is almost no residue on it anyway. |

I thought the anti-drainback valve will keep the oil in the filter. |

Spend $29.95 and have it done "professionally."
Or Buy a couple of cans of brake cleaner and hose the area down after you've finished. In all cases, I loosen it just enough to let the oil drip out VERY slowly. It doesn't take long before most is out. Of course the challenge is to NOT tip it down once you are clear of all threads...then it really makes a mess down your arm. On other cars, I sometimes use a piece of alum. foil and wrap the control arm, exhaust pipe, whatever. When finished, ball it up and throw it away. The parts underneath are clean. --Jeff |

The OUTLET is wide-open all the time, and that's the part that makes the mess. Wait a half-hour before removing the filter and you'll have no mess. -- Tegger The Unofficial Honda/Acura FAQ www.tegger.com/hondafaq/ |

It doesn't address the spillage per se but this way you can use the other tricks without getting oil up you sleeve and it into your armpits. |
