Default Honda 4cylinder vs 6cylinder

I have a civic I was considering trading in. During service at the
Honda dealer today I ask the tech about the v6. He told he would stay
away from the v6,,they are always coming in for service with
transmission problems. He said the v6 overpowers the transmission. So
are the Honda 4cylinder really that much more reliable than their 6?

Well, mine is. It's an '00 4cyl automatic with 104,000km and it's rock
solid. Other than minor maintenance it holds up great to the -20C
(-3farenheit) winters up here (and hot summer commuting).

There were a very few problems with the 6's tranny a few years ago when
high mileage was reached, leading to a recall and installation of a kit
to keep the second gear properly cooled. The 6's transmission has no
other issues, and current models, at least '04 forward, were slightly
redesigned to fix the problem.

The nearly same transmission is used in the MDX, where it tolerates a
3.5 liter, 265+ horsepower V6 (whose origin is in the 3 liter Accord
engine). It does fine, so it should certainly handle the Accord's
power. I would not avoid the 6 due to transmission concerns. Change
the fluid regularly and don't let teenagers drive it, and it will
almost certainly be okay.

I bought an I4 06 Accord over the V6 simply because the I4 has more than
enough power. Don't think will find you need the V6, but drive both and find
out for yourself.

In my experience, and from what I have leaned from talking to 2 Honda
service technicians, over a period of years the V6 is just as reliable
as the 4 cylinder, if the owner has the car serviced regularly and does
not abuse the vehicle. As far as which to get, I would try to test
drive each. Again, in my experience, for driving pleasure, the 4 is
fine and peppy enough, but the V6 is BETTER(love that acceleration!) and
gives quite good mileage on highway driving at a steady 65-70 mph. But
each person has his own desires--do what seems best to you.
