Default '88 Accord idle speed

I have an '88 Accord LX with just under 68k miles on it. I loaned this
car to my brother in-law to use until he got his new car. He had the
car for about 4 months. Before I loaned him the car, there were no
problems with the car. After he gave it back, there has been a funny
idle speed problem. Funny because it doesn't happen all the time. The
car starts fine and idles fine. You then drive the car for a while.
Then when you stop the car, as at a traffic light, the car will die.
When you go to start the car, it is very hard to start. I usually have
to wait a few minutes before it will start again. This car usually
starts fine hot or cold. The other odd thing is that after the car
does start, the idle speed will not be high enough to keep the motor
running. It will stall again unless I keep my foot on the gas. Any
ideas on what may be wrong? TIA.

After driving around for half an hour (motor is now good and hot) how
does it start after a 5 minute stop?

Carbureted or fuel injected?

If fuel injected, suspect the ignition coil, especially if
it's over five years old. See also the candidate causes at
http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/faq.html#startrun

When was a tuneup (plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor,
fuel filter, air filter, check timing, maybe drop a bottle
of Chevron Techron into the fuel tank) last done? Were OEM
parts used?
