1st I fixed it. Then 2 months later Honda issued their recall and I
had to go to the dealer and have them do the work to get reimbursed for
my part purchase. Now the damn thing is flaking out again/ cutting off
randomly. Think I have any remote chance if I fuss enough to get this
fixed yet again? that was late 2002. This is now.

you can help the problem significantly by physically making sure you
return the key fully to the #2 position after starting the motor. the
switch burns out because the key tends to rest part way between the #2 &
#3 and there's insufficient contact area to handle the current flow.

Fair enough. But wouldn't this constitute very poor design and lack of
foresight?

sure. this is the kind of thing that results from bean counters running
the company and their use of "marketing feedback". "make the switch
action lighter" the marketeers say. so it happens, [despite the fact
that it really should have been accommodated by a whole switching
assembly redesign, but the bean counters weren't going to pay for that]
and behold, it costs the company millions!

my 2000 civic had stupid climate controls high on the dash and close to
the light switch stalk. i was forever knocking those things onto
different settings by mistake because of this bad positioning and /way/
too light rotation resistance. i came to really hate it and it's one of
the things that led me to get rid of that car. who in their right mind
would risk alienating their customer base over lousy messed up
ergonomics? i say leave that stuff to the ergonomics specialists, not
the marketeers [or bean counters]. that's why i've kept my 89 civic -
has about the best ergonomics of any car i've ever driven.

This switch ( part # 35130-SM4-305 ) on a '90 accord ( Japan
made ) suddenly could not feed a current to engine ( F20A )'s
distributor after cranking, so this accord was stuck in a slow
moving traffic, blocking traffic.
I never knew any ignition switch can fail @ just 68,800 km :
interior of this failed switch has no crack / dirt inside !

I may be out of order here...BUT...I think you/I/we should preserve the
original Subject line on this thread for a couple of reasons:

1) We are discussing cars that are 2 generations apart.
2) More importantly we are discussing a recall item that many folks
need to know about or might be looking for as there is still a chance
of having said item repaired free of charge (isn't there??!). Just a
thought.
