My local Honda dealer is asking for $800 for replacing timing belt fo my 96 Accord LX 4 cylinder. I am in Indiana and zip code is 47906. think it it too high in Indiana I bought the car new and it has 65k miles now How hard is DIY? It's not hard, if you can remember the Three Rules of Timing Belt Replacement: Rule Number 1: Always use an OEM belt, no matter what brand of car you're working on. (Okay, I'll make an exception for Yugos and DeLoreans and other cars you can't get OEM parts for.) Rule Number 2: The bolt that holds the crankshaft pulley on is impossible to get out--and you can't change the belt until you remove this bolt. http://www.tegger.com has tips on getting this bolt out of the engine. Rule Number 3: Once you DO get the bolt out and the timing belt off, don't turn the crank or the cam until the new belt is on. --jm |
