Diesels seem to last longer than gasoline engines - million-km and even
million-mile diesel VWs are not as rare as one might think.

not diesels with alloy heads. or at least, not the ones with indirect
injection. the thermal cycling is so extreme, and pressures so high,
they crack around the pre-combustion chamber like crazy - most are lucky
to get 300kkm out of them. the new direct injection diesels may be
better, but the reputation modern lightweight diesels have for alleged
high mileage is somewhat optimistic and "misinherited" from their old
fashioned cast iron brethren.
