Pinging on very moderate acceleration on level road. Cleaned plenum.
Cleaned EGR port. Replaced EGR valve. Ran like butter for about 6 weeks and pinging gradually returned. Repeat procedure. Same exact set of results 2 times now. Only...he--hem..."high-test" will stop the pinging. Thoughts? |

I could be wrong, but I believe that particular engine requires premium fuel. If not, then it could be the quality of the gas you're putting in it regardless of octane, or perhaps the ignition timing needs to be adjusted. |

Same for the '01, so probably the same for the '98 as well. |

I thought you were specifically stating what the '96 used as a point of reference and I was merely backing that up with what the owners manual of my '01 says. |

I've run a $10 can of cleaner that a local Honda/Acura specialist gave
me.Nothing. Tech level stuff not avail a A-zone, etc. Had the code for insufficient EGR flow once and dealer TSB/recall "fixed" it...6 weeks and pinging again. No, i can't go back...been too long. Had same problem through MARTA last year when i cleaned it out and replaced EGR. 6 weeks fine. I buy gas all over the place...usually Exxon, Shell, but not always. The problem clearly causes insuff EGR flow which i assume causes the ping but damned if I can put my finger on it. So could off timing cause this to build gradually over the 6 weeks until pinging appears?? I did plugs, cap, rotor, timing...i SWEAR!!! At a loss for 3+ years now. thanks. Kevin |

Ooh Ooh Ooh!!! What he said!! Here's what the dealer supposedly did
to mine back in 2001 or 2002. From a related post about 3 posts below this one: http://tinyurl.com/jvur3 <<Having described the problem above, I would like to get the service performed myself. I read the TSB from honda, and the procedure seemed simple. Basically cleaning of the EGR port in the intake manifold is required. Of course Honda also suggests that the EGR port on the intake manifold to be drilled with a "special drill" to make the hole bigger and insert some kind of "tube" that comes with the kit that is available at Honda dealer. The kit itself is around $80. My question is, is it worthwhile to get the kit and do all this drilling business or just replace the entire intake manifold ($160 - Honda OEM from dealer) ? Will the new Manifold have the bigger EGR port as Honda knows about this problem in the year 2000 and would have corrected the EGR ports on the new parts ? >> |
