This is a grim situation, indeed. We won't survive as a species unless our vehicles have more horsepower and torque every single year.

How people managed to get by with less power in comparable vehicles is the stuff of ancient legend. It is well known that owners of most 1990 Japanese cars had to hire tow trucks for grades steeper than 5%. Yes, kids, Hondas and Toyotas were rarely seen outside city limits until about 10 years ago. They just didn't have the powah, Scotty!

We, the highly intelligent human race, facing finite realities of fossil fuels and global warming, must never attempt to improve fuel economy at the expense of even ONE horsepower! Doing so would mean falling behind the big ego curve. It's all about power, image, more power and more image! Tailgaters will soon have the ability to ply their trade at 100 MPH on 7% grades. Positively Utopian!
