Default 2000 Honda Accord EX V6-Any Advise???

I purchased a 2000 Honda Accord EX V6 from a private seller in April
2005 with 50K. Since buying this car I have had the EGR valve replaced
twice, and the check engine light has still come on, only to go back
off before I can get it to the dealer. My car also has a light whiney
sound in behind the motor close to the fire wall, sometimes it is
louder, like when I accelerate. Just last night I was driving home and
the battery light, brake light, and the door/trunk lights all came on.

I took my car to the dealership this morning, and have yet to hear back
from them. But they assured me the whining sound was probably just bad
gas. Telling me that Kentucky gets some of the worst gas. I do not
think that is a plausible excuse, but OK. I am not car intelligent by
any means. I have read some of the reviews of the 98-02 Accords, and I
knew about the EGR valve when I bought the car. Does any of these
other problems sound familiar to anyone. Have I bought myself a
lemon?? Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!! I mean GREATLY!!!

Thanks
Becky

If they're replacing the EGR just because you have an EGR code then you
might want to consider another shop. I'd find out exactly what the code
was so, someone here can look it up. The 2000 should have one or more
P#### codes when it codes up. Even if the light goes out, you might be
able to tell what the code was from a scanner (that the shop has).

The EGR system is more than the valve. A common problem is that the EGR
passages in the engine cake up with carbon so, the EGR valve might be
fine but, the EGR system doesn't work. It's possible to clean the carbon
out if it hasn't gotten too far (if it's completely plugged then there's
no way to get cleaners in there other than pulling the head).

In the US (most people here seem to be canadian), the single most common
cause of codes today is a bad gas cap. The seal on the cap goes bad and
you get an evaporative emissions code.

You didn't buy the car from this dealer so, they have no vested interest
in covering up problems. You just have to watch for normal repair dude
incompetence. I'm skeptical of bad gas causing a whine. Did you do a
carfax on this car before you bought it? Assuming it's an automatic, I'd
check the transmission fluid level. Power steering pumps will whine if
they're low on fluid too.

Apparently it's a chronic problem on Accords.

http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl461d.htm

Remember in the US all cars have an 8 year, 80K mile warrenty on
emissions.

Yes, the car is an automatic. I am having the dealership check all the
fluids today, so the trans. and ps fluids should be checked. I will
get the codes from the dealer and check back here. As far as the EGR
valve, I don't think it is about the repair dude. The first valve was
replaced at the Honda dealership in the city where I bought the car,
since they had been doing the scheduled maintenance for the previous
owner. The second valve was replaced at the Honda dealership in the
city where I live, and the check engine light has still come on since.
I did run a car fax report on this car when I bought it, and nothing,
not even a finder bender. Is there anything I can do to better
maintain the passages to the engine from the EGR without having to take
things apart and clean them? Thank you for your help!!

It looks as if you might have an extended warranty supplied by honda on
these issues. I know in the '96 and '97 model years the warranty was
extended to 14 years 140K miles.

Odysee's with the same engine have the same problem.

It looks like you live with it until the light stays on then they'll repair
the EGR under warrenty.

This was from about 10 minutes research on Google. Glad my civic doesn't
have EGR.

It will probably turn out to be the alternator whining as it replaces the
charge into the battery at some high-ish rate. As the battery voltage
comes up to normal, the current will drop off and the whine will go
away.

I bought mine new.
At about 30,000mi., the torque converter (part of transmission) was
replaced under warranty. After another 5,000mi., the transmission was
replaced. Both were done under warranty and the warranty was extended to
100,000mi. At about 60,000mi., the EGR was replaced. It too was covered
under warranty. While I like the car, it's always had drivability issues;
e.g. hesitation, slippage in transmission and it still does.
So, if you like the car, you may have to put up with some known defects.
Otherwise, trade it.
Good luck,
TomC

Becky, Please share what you were told and what you were charged
when/if they fixed your car. I have the exact same car with the exact
same problem.

Thanks,
dolph

To All:
The symptoms quoted are caused by the alternator. It apparently loads
so badly that it groans and sounds atrocious. The strange mix of
warning lights are due to a low charge current and/or voltage. I
replaced the alternator (not as easy as it looks) and all is well now.

The "special" extended warranty for a 2000 EX tranny is for 7 years and
100,000 miles. Don't know if it's transferrable. I have the Honda
letter from the original owner, dated Summer 2002.
