I have a 89 civic when the motor is at normal temp and i stop the motor
feels like it wants to shut down when it is in gear. When i when i take
it
out of drive or reverse and put it nuteral or park it stops and idles
fine. i have changed the plugs wires cap and rotor. but it still happens
anyone have any ideas as to what might because this. it was recomended by
a freind to change the coil and or the o2 sensor. does anyone know if
these parts cause the problem.

Yes, this could be the ignition coil, especially if it doesn't happen when
the engine has just been started and is warming up.

How old is your ignition coil? Is the one in the car a genuine Honda coil.

www.autozone.com has some checks you can do on it.

See also www.tegger.com/hondafaq (word search: coil)

Using genuine Honda parts?

Could be the O2 sensor too. I would replace the O2 sensor on this car
anyway, assuming it's the original. See https://www.automedicsupply.com/ for
very inexpensive, OEM ones.

For both the coil and the O2 sensor, I would expect to see problems at idle,
as well.
