Just curious, but who elected it as such?

I figured it would be a toss-up between the Civic and the new Hyundai

I know. I'm sort of glad it happened because I did pay MSRP and I
don't want to be the only "idiot." I must say, it's worth every penny
so far (with "so far" being 1700 miles).

Don't be too enthused by the "Car of the Year" title since Motor Trend
bases it more on market hype than vehicle merit, one of the worst
examples being the Chevy Vega, their choice in 1971, and several years
earlier they named the Toyota Corona as "Import Car of the Year" after
Toyota paid for the entire year's circulation. At least with the Honda
Civic is a good choice.

The one thing that bugs me about the "Car of the Year" award is that it is
for "new cars". Thus, if there are three crappy new designs and one super
excellent existing design car in a class, the "car of the year" award goes
to one of the three crappy ones because they are newly designed.

The Renaut Aliance (Aliant?) was a "Car of the Year" and it was crap ....
don't know if the "Yugo" also received that "honor".

Not if they want to buy now, but that's usually the case for new
models. It should be possible to buy them cheaper next spring.
