Default tire shine residue

Whenever I try to use tire shine, I get residue on the body panels
behind the tires after driving. I'm using Eagle brand tire shine, and I
usually scrub the tires with a brush first to get the dirt off, rinse,
then spray the tire shine on the tire and use a tire swipe sponge to
even it out.

Any tips on how to prevent residue from spinning off? Any particular
brands that are better? Spray-on vs wipe on?
