`90 honda accord

I have a `90 honda accord,it`s been fine. `Til one day the speedo on the
dash decides to quit & now it kills the eng when coming to a stop.Shut the
car off & restart it,& it seems to snap out of it for awhile.Is this a case
of a bad sensor? Do I need a code reader or wouldn`t it help? any info
would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
