Default '93 Accord T-belt Service - Balance Shaft Gear Set????

Hi All,

Thanks for the excellent responses on the power steering hose problem. I
brought this question up with Tegger off-list and he never heard of it.
Before getting the service done, the shop mgr. started talking about the
Balance Shaft Gear Case probably needing replacing. Has anyone heard of
this? He said that it's common for high mile Honda's to need this by the
time for 2nd t-belt. Now I've done a lot of background searches and have
yet to read of this. I went along to the tune of $208.00 and labor in
addition to the t-belt job, was this something that was truly needed? '93
Accord SE 224K miles. Thanks.

Carl

Isn't the balance shaft just that - a shaft. I don't think there are any
gears associated with it. It is usual to replace the balance shaft belt
when you do the timing belt.

Well, I found the part in question on cheapesthondaparts.com, it's the
driven gear, rear shaft. Still, is this something that typically needs
replacing on high mileage Accords? Just wondering....

The seal in the balance shaft gear case could leak, requiring gear housing
replacement. There's also an o-ring on the back side. Verify with the
service writer if seal (not o-ring) leakage is the primary reason for
replacement...HTH

Now that I've seen the drawings, I think I understand better (what a nice
site!)
http://tinyurl.com/46gtu

It's part #36 on that illustration.

There are TWO balance shafts, not one. Both are driven off the same belt.
It's the cogged wheel ("gear") that engages the balancer shaft belt that
Carl apparently had replaced.

Check out that pricing...

Yep, it was a rather expensive job. With this much invested, I'm thinking
of keeping it around for awhile. Update on the PS hose. After cleaning all
of the parts in the area per your suggestion, I noticed some spots on the
lower hose which are right in line with the inside of the pulley. Looks
more like a front seal problem than a hose leak.
