Hi,

after a 8 week wait my new accord tourer turns up tomorrow. Does anyone
know what the running in period/rules are for accords? Or does anyone have
any advice?

I don't know anything specific about this model, but here is general advice
for breaking in a new engine...

Take the car on a long highway trip (500 miles, 1000km), and vary your
speed as you drive. Then change the oil and filter. Starting and stopping
the engine to drive around town is not good, since the car is frequently
running cold. Driving at the same speed for a long time is not good, since
it might develop wear patterns for that RPM.

I talked to a guy from the East Liberty (Ohio) plant, and he said "Don't
worry about anything about break-in engine wise, just go easy on the
brakes for the first 800-1000 miles".

First step is to READ THE FINE MANUAL . . . . . Find out all the cool
stuff, like where the jack is hidden, how to fold the seats down, what
to do at the gas station....

No long trips, no long idling, no street racing. Drive it normally until
the first oil change. Do NOT change the oil prematurely.

You can rev it up a bit, (feel free to pass on the highway), and don't
'lug' it by trying to keep the revs too low around town.

I'm driving it up to Scotland for the weekend so that's a 500 mile trip
right there. Just keep
varying the rpm. Thanks for the tip.

Oh man, no street racing. That's why I got the tourer so I *could* go
street racing and transport a fridge home at the same time :-)

Just don't change the oil before the interval recommended in your
manual. It's special stuff.

leave the oil in for the specified amount of time. 7500 miles, maybe,
for extended highway commuting, 3750 for city stop n go stuff.

double check the manual, do what it says.

ditto on that.

although the oil might not be special any more. juries still out on
that, but changing it after the first 500 or 1000 miles is 50s era
detroit iron-think.
