My front windshield needs to be replaced. The Honda dealer tells me that
there are two windshields for my car...one is $350 (made in USA) and the other one, which is "recommended" according to my VIN is $850 (made in Japan). I have searched high and low to verify what they are telling me is the truth. Does it matter which Honda windshield I purchase? Some dealers say no and others say yes!? My windshield "stamp" says that it is manufactured by Asahi. Thanks! |

I would go to a regular glass shop and tell them that you want an OEM
windshield. You will find that the price will be close to the generic one. I have always insisted on OEM glass, and have never seen a significant difference in the price. Go to a glass shop.....as dealers use glass shops for their glass
replacement (its too technical for service dept personnel to be trained to do). Even, when dealers use their own branded glass, they use a local glass shop for installation. Most U.S. made Hondas use PPG branded glass and Asahi branded glass for the Japanese made cars. For my 2001 CR-V, it is about $250 for a replacement front windshield, incl labor. Glass shops discount the "list" price anywhere from 50-70% as there is a HUGE markup. The good local glass shops use glass from PPG, Mygrant, and Guardian. Cheap Chinese glass has hit the market, which is not as good quality, though it meets DOT requirements (don't use it). I suspect that your VIN number identifies your car as a Japan made one which triggered the "recommendation". However, I would not hesitate to install the US sourced Honda part. John |
