My alternator is going in my 1993 Honda civic ex:
1) Should I get the one that's in the car rebuilt? 2) Should I get a rebuilt one at pepboys? 3) Should I let the dealer/independant mechanic install it? 4) Should I let pepboys install it? Any help to these questions would be appreciated. |

Find a local shop that specializes in rebuilding generators & starters. Have them repair yours, fixing what's broke and leaving alone what is still good. It may take some looking, these guys are often in the older part of town and may not have a nice new waiting room with a color TV. But they might have a spitoon. At least in this part of the country ![]() Texas Parts Guy |

Whatever you do, do not buy the rebuilt alternators from PepBoys.
Everyone that I have heard complain that theirs blew out after a year or two have all said they came from PepBoys. Granted that these same people had Ford/GM cars. I bought mine rebuilt from Honda for a hefty $260 and hope that it will last as long as my old one did (8 years)! If the location of the alternator is in the same location as in my Integra, then it will be a pain to get it out as you have to remove part of the drive shaft to remove it. If it is on top like the accords then it is pretty easy to get to and you should be able to install it yourself. They have a lifetime warranty, so I'm only out a little labor if the part goes bad again. Batteries are different. The pro-rated warranties on crappy batteries just seem to be a way to keep you hooked into paying $20 per year for batteries for as long as you are willing to do it. -- --- Clarence A Dold - Hidden Valley (Lake County) CA USA 38.8-122.5 |
