Hi all,
My 1990 Accord windshield fogs up very badly when it rains. I put the
controls on 100% defrost and crank the fan up to highest and it still
fogs.By the manual you are supposed to put the A/C on to fix this.
When it's 10 C out ((50F) this seems rather odd and it's awfully cold
as well.

Other vehicles I have driven do not seem to have this problem to
anything close to this degree! Is this normal? or is there a problem
either with my vehicle or with what I'm doing?

Thanx,

Canadaloon

strangely enough, you need to put the AC on, the air coming out the
defroster vents, and the temp setting to "hot"

the AC takes the humidity out of the air, and hot air gets humidity off
a windshield better.

Best and cheapest way to solve this is to spit on it. No more fog!

Or for something a little less disgusting try rainx anti-fog.

A lot of other cars will kick the a/c on with the defrost (without you even
knowing it)... make sure you set the temp at HOT, and you will still get hot
air.

A slow leak coolant leak in the heater core will fog a windshield...

Sure. You're shoving very moist, humid air as fast as you can right at
the windshield. It will fog up.

> By the manual you are supposed to put the A/C on to fix this.

That's correct. You want to solve the problem of moist, humid air going
to the windshield. You need to remove the moisture from the air. That
is the sole purpose of the A/C system. So turn the A/C on.

> When it's 10 C out ((50F) this seems rather odd and it's awfully cold
> as well.

The purpose of A/C is not to provide cold air; the purpose of A/C is to
provide DRY air. It uses the physics of passing moist air across a cold
surface to collect the moisture on that cold surface (think of a cold
drink on a hot day, and how wet the outside of the glass gets) and drain
it away, leaving dry air to leave the cold surface.

Yes, that dry air is colder right there. But you have a car--and it has
a great heater. So set the temperature lever to whatever's most
comfortable for you at 10 degrees C, but leave the A/C on. Your car
heater will warm the air back up and feed nice, dry, warm air right into
your cabin.

> Other vehicles I have driven do not seem to have this problem to

Other cars that you've driven turn on the A/C automatically when you hit
the "defrost" button. Honda didn't do that until about 1998. They were
one of the last holdouts on this, if not the last holdout.

So you took your Honda and did with it what you did with the other cars:
you hit "defrost" and gave it all the air you could. But what you
didn't know was that Honda wasn't turning on the A/C for you with the
defrost button.

This is why you read your owner's manual of every car you own.
