I would like to attempt changing the transmission fluid on my 1994
Accord Wagon myself. My owners manual does not say how. Do I need to buy a service manual or is there a resource online that will tell me how? What tools, parts if any, and compatible fluids. Thanks for you help, Mike |

First you need to buy a drain plug washer from your Honda dealer, and
either 3 quarts of ATF or MTF transmission fluid. - When doing this, it is a good idea to have the car warmed up before actually performing this as it loosens the oil a bit and makes it easier to come out. - You will need some form of a breaker bar and a 3/8 ratchet and should be able to access the drain plug underneath the passenger's side of the hood, but you may want to put it on jack stands, or remove the passenger's tire to get better accessibility to the drain plug. - Drain out the transmission and see if the color has changed to brown or smells burnt. If this has happened you'll need to do this change again or it may help to add 3 additional quarts while you have the drain plug removed and let the old fluid mix and drain with the new fluid. - Clean the metal deposits from the drain plug, remove and replace the washer on the drain bolt and tighten back the drain bolt. - If you have an auto, you can add the new ATF from the dipstick. If it is a manual, there is a fill valve located on top of the drain plug. Good Luck and hope everything goes smoothly. You'll need 4 litres of Z1 tranny fluid from Honda, and you should run the tranny until warm, and drain the fluid just seconds after shutting the engine off, in a gear, so the CRUD is in solution, not sitting in the bottom of the tranny. Don't be shocked at the grey 'clump' on the magnetic drain plug. Drain and fill again in a week or two, after you've put a few hundred miles on it. If there's a 'clump' the second time, be shocked. :-( 'Curly' |
