A frieds daughters Civic would not start today.
Gave an error code of 16 flashes. She has had this issue a few times before. After doing all the checks, everything looked gooed, except for the +12V across the injectors for 2 seconds following key on. I pulled the ECU and opened it up. The unit had a lot of surface corrosion. I intend to clean it this Monday, but I suspect she will need a new (or used) CPU/ECM. Will the ECM from a 1991 Civic work, I can pull mine and use it to test the rest of her car. At the moment my Civic is our only vehical and I am a little leary of swaping least I damamge mine. If we need to find one in a junk yard, what years will work? will one from a CRX of the same years work? Has anyone had any luck with the rebuilt units sold by Advance? They have several, from about $450 down to $150, the only differnce being the warrenty period. I pulled mine just to check for corrosion and there is not a trace. I would have thought the circuit board would have coated with a protective spray (silicon). Her car is a 1990, 3 door (or 2 door with hatchback), MT, dual point fuel injection. Terry |

Is the car a 4 speed (70 hp) or 5 speed (92 hp)
I have a ECU for a 90-91 5speed 92 hp. Meaning there appears to be a problem with the fuel injectors, as you appear to know from the rest of your post (but for others)... I trust you've been through the troubleshooting chart for this, such as that provided at www.autozone.com (click on the free repair guides link on the right, put in car info, click on "emissions controls," then "troubleshooting charts"). > She has had this > issue a few times before. My reference for this is Majestic's online parts site as follows: www.hondaautomoviveparts.com states that the ECM from a 1991 Civic LX manual transmission and the ECM for a 1990 Civic 3-Door DX are the same. To check other Hondas, go to the parts site, put in the car's info, then go to menu choice "Fuse Box-Relay-Horn." Majestic wants $664 for a new one, plus shipping and handling. But more below on getting second-hand ones. > I can pull mine > and use it to test the rest of her car. > At the moment my Civic is our only vehical and > I am a little leary of swaping least I damamge > mine. > If we need to find one in a junk yard, what years > will work? will one from a CRX of the same years work? I checked one model of 1990 CRX, and it too appears to have the same ECM as the Civics above. > Has anyone had any luck with the rebuilt units sold > by Advance? > They have several, from about $450 down to $150, > the only differnce being the warrenty period. > I pulled mine just to check for corrosion and there > is not a trace. I also saw at least one used ECM for a 1990 Civic at http://www.autopartsearch.com/searchframe.cfm , going for under $150. Updates welcome. I'm no guru but am just trying to learn more. Caroline 1991 Honda Civic LX, manual trans., 155k miles, ECM seems fine. |
