Hi all. I've just replaced both dirve axles on my '90 Civic LX with ARI
brand remanufacured items, due to split boots on the ones that were on there. Everything went fine with the swap but upon road testing the car afterwards I noticed a scraping/rattling noise on full steering lock, apparently coming from the right axle. I removed that axle and exchanged it for another and now the noise is much better but still there. More of a rattle or knock that does not seem to be the typical rhythmic sound associated with a bad CV joint. I'm suspicious that it's unlikely that I got two consecutive bad axles, but I can't think of anything else that could be causing this problem. The car has 100K miles and this is the second time the axles have been replaced. It has a five speed manual trans and the power steering leaks. Any ideas? Thanks, WW |

That could be a motor mount. How would you check it out? Other than replacing the mounts, of course... WW |

It may be that you need to look for a better grade of reman axle. There are still "rebuilders" out there hand-grinding ballraces with a die grinder. The good ones - Cardone, for example - either uses a very expensive CNC grinder, or uses new joints. Texas Parts Guy |
