I wonder if there is an particular reason to go with "Genuine Honda" disk
brake pads vs. high quality Wagner (or some other) pads? Might another brand be "too hard" and wear the rotors too much or something? I will be needing to replace front and rear pads on our '97 Ody. TIA! KWW |

My 1991 Honda Civic, 154k miles, is on its third set of brake pads and second
set of non-OEM brake pads. The non-OEM brake pads seem to be fine, though based on general reading, I recommend buying high end ones. The last pair I bought were Raybestos for around $43. OEMs cost about the same, but my first pair of OEMs didn't seem to last long (43k miles, 2 years), so I'm not inclined to go OEM again. I have never had any problems with my brakes, apart from a little screeching which turned out to be dust. They are NOT anti-lock brakes. Stay tuned as I have read many folks here say they will only buy OEM pads. About four weeks ago I put a set of Bendix "Import Quiet" Pads on the front
of our 99 V6 Accord. So far I have not heard any noise at all and the car seems to stop a little quicker. The OEM pads still had about 5,000 miles left on them but had started squealing when the car came to a stop. my first experience with a civic was that it was easy to get brake fade
on big hills. i thought it was just a civic problem with small disks. the pads were aftermarket - not sure what brand. then i switched to oem. fade is much less, pad dust on the wheels is much less and they come with a full anti-squeal shim and lube kit. unless you're going with really high quality racing disks & pads, i see absolutely no reason to not use oem. and it's not like there's a significant price differential if you buy oem pads online. Ya know I did save the receipt/invoice and warranty sheet, properly filling all out. I even posted here way back then in 2002 (under a different name) about how my new brake pads had a "life-time warranty." I remember the clerk at Carquest (which IIRC sells Raybestos under its name) telling me about this life-time warranty. But I thought surely there would be some fine print there that said something like 'normal wear nullifies this warranty.' There's not. The warranty isn't quite as explicit about this as you imply, talking about a lifetime warranty for "noise free" operation. Is Raybestos saying when my brakes hit the squealer point, I can exchange the old pads for new ones, no charge? Seems to fail the common sense test, so I'm asking... |
