You can see points of light right through the paper. That means there are holes. Big ones. Holes are not a good idea. They let dirt through. Obviously there have to be microscopic passages, which are also holes. But it is a matter of degree. I took another FRAM filter out of my car at that point and looked at it too. It had about 8 or 10 thousand miles on it and looked almost brand new. Since I live in an average dusty area, I surmise that a lot of the dirt was going right through instead of being trapped. JM |

As a filter gets older its holes slowly get smaller -- closing up with crud. So older filters work better than new filters -- up, of course, to the point that they don't let any oil pass through. Seems backwards -- but isn't. Thoughts? Quent |

I've given up on using Fram whenever possible. Their M.O. seems to be coming up with strange "technologies" such as Sure-Grip, "Triad" air filter fibers, etc, while skimping on other things like media area/ thickness, can thickness, cardboard internals, and flimsy filter surrounds. I once cut my finger on a Fram air filter when the metal mesh cut through the soft foam surround. I've never had such a problem with AC, Purolator, or OEM filter. There are certain filter types where there are one or two aftermarket suppliers, and all the major sellers "rebrand" the filters. The 94- Integra air filter was one. Regardless of whose label was on the package, they were either made in Korea or Thailand and appeared to be from the same suppliers. The OEM Toyo Roki filter is somewhere around the $45 range by now. As for a good paper filter - it probably depends on the application. That being said, I feel that nothing beats a good oiled disposable paper filter. The paper (which may contain synthetic fibers) should be effective at trapping dirt, and the oil should help to trap more dust than paper alone. I've tried reusable oiled gauze filters (K&N) and don't trust them. K&N relies on oil to trap dust, while the oil in an oiled paper filter adds to the fibers' ability to trap dust. |

Have you compared Fram oil filters to Honda OEM lately?
Well they are made by the same manufacturer, Honeywell. Although I am hoping they are manufactured to different specs. This only happened recently, Honda changed the design of the filter for my 98 Civic LX. t |

But cost 30 Canadian percent more. K&N is another. I'd been using these reusable for years but got tired of them because of practicality issues. Anyway, I trust the dealer genuine part. |

In one scenario I bought an OEM BMW air filter (MAHL) and a V belt from two separate source and one of the source fail to keep their quality (rips.) I will give thumbs up for europartsdirect.com for quality aftermarket, genuine and OEM parts. I now make it a habit of testing each parts for strength before installing them regardless of the same manufacturer. |

Well Honda did downsize their oil filters to a universal size fairly recently but no, Honda has been selling filters made by Fram for years... as well as as some made by the Toyo Roki subsidiary in the U.S., i.e. Filtech. You don't have to by their universal, "one size fits all" if you use an aftermarket one like Purolator. If so, which of the two grades of Purolator? Ron |
