I just spent 8 hours Saturday replacing all struts, rotors, brake
pads, and driveshafts on my 96 Accord EX, so I thought I'd relay some thoughts on how to replace the rotors with a minimal amount of effort: 1) A 36mm socket (with 1/2" drive; $6.99 from Sears) attached to an impact gun will take the spindle nuts off. 2) I bought a slide hammer to separate the hubs from the bearings. This worked fine (in conjunction with a hub puller) for the driver's side hub, but the passenger side was a lot more stubborn (it's just never easy). After pounding on the hub for about 30 minutes with the slide hammer and getting almost nowhere, we borrowed a neighbor's tool called an air chisel (Campbell Hausfeld) makes one for about $25. Put this between the hub and rotor, pull the trigger, and watch as the hub and rotor are magically separated. This saved my rear. 3) A tool called a hand impact ($25 from Sears) will take the Phillips-head screws off the rear rotors without stripping them. Hope this helps someone out. Chris |
