Default KREX Graphite used in dealer oil change.

My wife took our '98 CR-V to the local Honda Dealer for an oil change.

I noticed on the invoice that they added something called KREX
Graphite lubricant at an additional cost of $4.98.

Does anyone know anything about this stuff? I usually do the oil
changes myself but occasionally we'll have the dealer do it - they've
never used KREX in the past.

I can't believe Honda would recommend using this product. Is it a
dealer money-making scheme? Should I be concerned about it in my CR-V?

ALL dealerships use it.
Added to the engine oil.

Needed, I doubt it, but no harm was done.

Would classify that one as a maintenance scale version of the "vehicle
etching fee" and "customer service fee" I realized I'd purchased with my
Accord.

That is the kind of thing which would have me never go to that shop again.

Honda owner's manuals routinely advise against using additives in the oil,
yet dealers do it to filch a few more dollars out of your pocket.

Either learn to do it yourself, or find a competent independent mechanic you
trust.

John

Let's just say this: techs who use it can keep the Krex bottle caps and
turn them in for cash.

Krex has a little scheme going on here...

We don't use any additives at our dealership. Honda strongly recommends
against using oil additives. Call customer relations and have them contact
the dealer with your complaint.

I doubt it will do any harm, but I wouldn't be happy about the $4.98

When it comes to oil changes, I would be a little pessimistic. During my last
oil change at the dealership,
I observed the mechanic closing the drain plug before all the bad oil drained
out. If they're willing
to leave the gunk buildup from the bad oil, I wonder what else they're willing
to leave in the engine.
