Yep. They had to keep it overnight to test it cold, but the dealer did
find a problem with the transmission and I'm getting a new one.

So it seems the 2002 did not solve the transmission problem, so I
would expect a similar warranty extension at some point, if Honda is
honest about it...

I agree that the 2002 revision didn't seem to solve the problem. My
2nd trans was installed in early May 2002. It was subsequently
replaced in November 2003.

I would bet on Honda owning up to a problem only if they determine the
cost associated with a recall or warranty extension to be less than
the adverse effects of bad publicity.

I have heard from many people with bad '98-'99 transmissions. Honda
did replace my 2nd failed transmission for free, but they still
haven't officially extended the warranty for '98 and '99 vehicles.
The new recall on the Pilot/MDX/Odyssey doesn't exactly make me feel
any better about Honda's ability to manufacture a qualty automatic.
It's a shame too, because I was really starting to like the MDX!

I'm beginning to wonder about the ability of Honda's AT design to handle
the higher loads and engine power we now see, compared to what it was
originally designed for. Honda's AT is quite unique and resembles more a
manual transmission, with gears mounted syncromesh style to parallel shafts
with individual clutch packs for each gear combo.

I've been told that in the early days, to avoid licensing patents for the
planetary (Saginaw) gear systems, Honda decided to go it alone and invent
their own system. AFAIK nobody else in the industry uses this system so
every time Honda increases load/power on the design it's a fresh sheet of
paper with no precedents for design guidelines.
