hi all,
i have a 1998 Honda CR-V with 61Kms (Canadian). after driving it for about 10 Kms on a freeway at about 110Km/h, i could hear some different noises from the engine area. it almost sounds like a engine misfire. this noise comes when i am accelerating .. i suspect it is not engine misfire because the engine power is still the same - i.e., the engine does not feel any less powerfull. the problem is not showing up always. it is most noticeable when i exit the freeway. after few minutes the problem then goes away... what is the problem? as the vehicle is out of warranty, I would like to know the problem a bit before taking it into the dealership. the car will be in for transmission oil change and valve adjustment tommorow. i am doing these as a precaution after reading the postings here.. at this time, i am thinking it might be the ABS braking system.. may be the braking system has some difficulty reboosting the pressure or something... the ABS light stays on few seconds longer than usual at startup - however it does blink or come on after start up. i would deeply appreciate your input. if possible, please CC your response to maheswar@cs.mcgill.ca thanks, -mahes |

It's called 'Dual Pump Fluid' (it only takes one litre) and many owners of 1st generation CRVs are finding that it loses it's viscosity at 30,000 miles. It will contribute to 'funny groaning noises', especially when making tight turns once it starts to fail. Considering that there are about 20 wet clutch surfaces in that rear differential, it's surprising they don't suggest changing the fluid way sooner /often. Those 'misfire' sounds will probably clear up after the valve adjustment. Also, your tires must be the same size all around. Including the spare in the (frequent) rotations will give you longer tire life. The Owner's manual for that year doesn't stress this point about protecting the rear differential from damage. hondasuv.com covers these points and others. 'Curly' |
