I've noticed on both of my cars after checking the ATF fluid, the dipstick
just seems to sit in place, it doesn't feel like it "locks" or "seats in"
like a plug.

Is there some sort of vacuum created that keeps it in place? Seems like a
really good bump could easily knock it out.

I've oly had experience with Hondas of '95 or newer, but you have to
push the dipstick down into the hole so the rubber plug seals it,
otherwise you'll get water and dirt going in there.

Same on my 98 civic (108K miles). I went to the dealer and got a new ATF
stick, and this new one is not loose like the old one, it feels tight.. I'd
recommend you to replace it for a new one.

Yeah, one of mine is a '96, the other a '91.. both of them feel like
there's no resistance when pulling or pushing.. I may check into getting
them replaced, shouldn't be too expensive.
