I was told that my son's Civic needs bushings before they can align the front
wheels, are these hard to replace? Or is it better to pay the $300+ to have
them replaced by a mechanic. Is there a place for honda manuals (shop) online
that one can download?

get a second opinion first.

It is easier and cheaper just to replace the whole control arm.

Did they mention which bushings need replaced?

I was told by them that it was both bushings in the arm, I am assuming that the
control arm is like a "A" arm that are like on other cars, I don't have a
service manual to look at it to see, and the car is about 80 miles from me.

What I have seen in the civics is the upper ball joint goes bad first.
Inspecting my civic wagon a few weeks back, I found the bushings on the
upper A-arm had goe bad. The parts in the bottom seem to last a long
time. If you have a few of these rubber bushings that need replacement,
just get the hypersuspension kit. for $130 or so you get EVERYTHING for
the suspension.
