Default 1996 Honda Passport 4wd problem?

Hi All,
When I shift from 2wd to 4wd (high range or low) the vehicle has a low
thumping vibration that seems to come from the right front. The best I can
describe it is like the passenger front wheel is severely unbalanced. If I
try and accelerate, the shaking gets pretty violent and when I let off the
gas slowly I hear a gear on gear grinding noise. When I drop it back to 2wd
all it well. Can someone describe what is wrong with it before I take it to
a dealer to get looked at?
Thanks in advance.
