> It's about time. I wonder how much it will start at?$$$ if this sort of thing keeps up pretty soon the only difference between automakers will be the badge on the front, Honda makes inexpensive fuel efficient cars. Chevy makes pick-ups. i see this new honda pick-up as just a novelty (like the F*rd explorer pick-up) and when people realize that they can not use to do anything it will lose support. it is just a pilot without any trunk space. just my 2 cents, feel free to disagree |

from what I understand the new SUT will be on an all new light truck
platform versus the minivan platform that the Pilot is made on. That is pretty much what Subaru is discovering with its
car based 'truck.' mike hunt Gordon McGrew wrote: > > On Fri, 09 Jan 2004 00:09:55 GMT, Andrew Smit > <smit_andrew@hotmail.com> wrote: > > > > >> It's about time. Stick on a penis enhancing bulbous nose, high headlamps which blind the rest of the world and give you a peeping Tom's view into the back of every other vehicle, call the engine a Hemi-something or a BIG block and <sigh> it'll sell. I've been wondering if there might be a market for a ball-turret accessory for Hummers. Whaddya think? Initially I thought the idea of Honda building a truck that wasn't
a body on frame design was a horrible mistake. Now I think otherwise: Here's why. Years ago, truck buyers bought trucks as tools to do work. The size of the bed was more important then the passenger compartment. While those buyers still exist, there exist a new group of truck buyers who wants a vehicle roomy enough for 4-5 people yet offer some truck practicality with a modest truck bed. The truck needs to look and feel like a truck meaning car based ones like the El Camino and Subaru cross over truck are out. Honda has built a huge reputation on building high quality cars however during the early 90's but they lost huge amounts of market share as Honda owners needed larger vehicles that Honda at the time didn't have. So they traded in their Accords and Civics for more family friendly Caravans and Explorers. Then a few years ago, Nissan decided to do something radical. They introduced a compact 4 door pickup. All the big name manufacturers have been selling compact 4 door pickups for years prior to that however they weren't being sold in the USA. But the trend caught on and it caught on big. Now just about all light trucks have a 4 door option in the US and they are selling. Now is a great time for Honda to enter in the market. Most people who buy SUVs and 4 door pickups don't do much towing nor do they go off road. How often do you see a Lincoln Navigator towing anything? But run over to your local mall and you will run out of fingers counting them. Enter in car based SUVs and 4 door pickups which give up on the stuff most people don't need and replace it with smoother ride, more car like feel, better fuel economy and easier parking. Directly attacking full sized trucks from GM, Ford and Dodge is a risky adventure for any import make. Most die hard truck buyers don't care about fuel economy, ride quality or in some cases long term reliability. No die hard truck buyers are a unique group who are loyal to their brands. Also a good percentage of full sized trucks are sold as fleet vehicles to local and US government agencies. With the exception of a few entities out there, just about all governemnt agencies will buy a domestic vehicle to fill their fleet. With the death of the Chevy Caprice, police departments are opting to buy full sized trucks or SUVs instead of buying an import car. Andrew Smit wrote: > > > It's about time.
