Need some help.. I am considering moving to Florida and wondered what I can
do with my 98 Civic. I am concerned about the following things: 1. speedo is listed in km/h (with miles below) and my understanding is that to license a car in the US, it must be the other way around. 2. Can I sell it there when I want to get rid of it or will the speedo issue require me to replace it with a US-spec one? I tried selling my Audi to someone in Texas and when the checked with the DMV, they told him that he would have to replace the speedo with a US one. I guess that I could sell it here and then buy a new car down there but I own this car outright and it only has 86K on it (1998) and is in excellent condition. Thoughts? Thanks, |

I bought it in Jan 98 so the 3-yr bumper-2-bumper is done and the 5-yr one
is over in 2 weeks... if there is no warranty, does that suggest that I should sell it in Canada? thoughts? "'Curly Q. See the Honda website about 'transferring warranty'. It doesn't, so you
should sell it off in Canada. Depending on your date of sale, there could be lots of warranty left on your car (you didn't mention the purchase date) 'Curly' M Gazer wrote: > Need some help.. It just needs dual labelling, which you've already got. Call Honda Canada at 1-888-922-8729. Tell them you are moving to the States and you need a Certificate of Compliance for your car. You will need to have your VIN number ready. If they can issue one for your car, you are home free. If your car was built in the US or Canada (VIN starting with 1 or 2), you won't even have to pay duty on it. If you do not have two air bags, you will not be able to get the Certificate of Compliance. -- TeGGeR® |

M,
The reason I suggest selling it before you go, is the whole warranty thing. Honda USA isn't obliged to honor any of the 'emmision system' warranties, or recalls, or ANYTHING that otherwise would have been covered for free in the future. There's a poor fellow in Calgary who brought a used (I think it's a '00) CRV up from Texas, and now he can't give it away because there's absolutely no warranty, even though it's not old, and the mileage is low.... would this matter given that when I would be taking it to the USA would be
outside of ANY warranties??? The recalls thing is another issue but in terms of warranties, the car would have nothing left on it.. Thanks, M "'Curly Q. The Florida definition of excellent with regard to rust might be different than the Canadian definition. My sister moved from Minnesota to California a few years ago and she had great difficulty selling her car due to the tiniest bit of rust that by Minnesota standards was inconsequential. Andrew |

You are all missing the most important parts. First the car will have to be
imported to the US and duties will be assessed. Then he will need a new drivers license for Florida (btw, he will have trouble getting one since he is not a us legal resident, just a snow bird, I am assuming) so the car can be registered there and then sold legally. Only then will the details of warranty (forgetaboutit) and speedo come into play. More headaches than you can imagine. Your main issue with the speedo is that the odometer calculates distance in
kilometers, not miles, as required in the U.S. That would be the reason for the new speedo....or at minimum, certified recalibration of the odometer, if that's even possible. Are you sure someone needs to have a drivers license to register a car? Not true in Conn/NJ/NY. > Only then will the details of warranty (forgetaboutit) and speedo come into play. I'm guessing that will have to be replaced to conform with the mileage certificate filled out when a car is sold. (or just ask the feds to add a checkbox for km) |
