Anyone change one of these. How do you get to it. My manual is less
than clear about how to get to it to change? Do you have to get to it from the underside in order to see the bolts? Is it ususally just the top (pulse) module that goes bad.? Can it be removed/replaced without taking the gear driven module off the transmission? |

WHen mine went bad, it was only the top module that needed replacing.
fairly easy, the guy changed it in the parking lot "Frank Boettcher" <fboettcher@ebicom.net> wrote in message news:cgtmP2ThiyuHJkDLnKti0bMBzBwu@4ax.com... > Anyone change one of these. Get to it from the passenger side. > My manual is less > than clear about how to get to it to change? Do you have to get to it > from the underside in order to see the bolts? At the top of the transmission use a 10mm socket. If you use a phillips screw driver you will remove the top pulse module. > Is it ususally just the top (pulse) module that goes bad.? Both goes bad. The spring loaded rod wears the lower part the the unit. The pulse pickup and it's bottom housing is sold as one unit. > Can it be > removed/replaced without taking the gear driven module off the > transmission? As stated, the VSS is sold as one unit. U should remove both to inspect and refurbish. |

You get to it from the top passenger side under the hood and I'm assuming a long extension and universal knuckle would be required. Looks like removing the air intake tube and associated vaccum hoses is either helpful or necessary The lower part, that is gear driven from the transmission and has the two hydraulic hoses attached to it as part of the variable power steering regulation system does not have to be removed to replace the upper portion and is likely to be OK. I have a check engine 17 code and no speedometer function and it is most likely the upper module that is bad. Thanks for any confirmation on my understanding of the situation. |

Yes you have it right. Unless the lower gear driven part is obviously damaged it's OK and you just change the upper electrical pulse unit part. When you take it out though be careful - there's a small pin called the "drive link" between the top of the driven shaft and the pulse unit... and which can fall out. As I understand it, it may stay in the top of the shaft or it may come out with the pulse unit - it's very small so be careful you don't lose it.
