The blinking S can indicate Vehicle Speed Sensor failure. Usually
that doesn't have much effect on power. Was the speedometer working
normally?

Thanks Gordon. I just realized that the apparent loss of power was
that the vehicle was starting in 3 or 4th gear. I didn't look at the
speedometer at the time. I did a Goggle search and found that if the s
light blinks and the Check Engine light comes on that it's very likely
the speed sensor.

There is a possibility that it could also be the shift solenoids since
the Check Engine Light did not come on. The other possibility is that
the code was cause by some envionmental events (high-power radio
transmission, nearby nuclear blast, etc) and will not recurr once
codes are cleared so I'm gonna pull the underhood back up fuse for 30
seconds to clear the code and see if the problem repeats itself. I
kinda lean on the direction that it was some kinda elctrical snafu
cause the problem cleared itself after I turned off and restarted the
car.

I own the Haynes Manual but it doesn't have any info on diagnosing
these kinda problems or on replacing the speed sensor or shift
solenoids should that be the problem. I'm a DIY quite capable kinda
guy, own tools 'lectric testers etc. Does anyone know of any links
where I can get more info on diagnosis or replacement of the speed
sensor or shift solenoids?

Thanks,

pepe
