I am shocked that there is such an overwhelming consensus against
antilock brakes. Some of you even say that they actually REDUCE safety rather than enhance it. If ABS is such a detriment, then why is it standard on all the Acuras? Come on, Acura buyers should be highly appreciated by Honda, because the profits are much greater. So why doesn't Acura offer non-ABS versions of its cars? Yes, I realize I might seem kooky to consider buying your grandfather's 1999 Buick instead of a new Honda Civic. I don't care about hipness or sportiness. I'd consider any car that can get me from Point A to Point B with reliability, safety, and relatively low cost. Even if it's butt ugly and popular only among senior citizens. Besides, I can always use the tape deck or CD player to listen to Britney Spears and Mandy Moore on long trips. ![]() Jason Hsu, AG4DG usenet@@@@@@jasonhsu.com |

Not one mentioned that ABS allows the driver to STEER while braking, when normal brakes lock-up. Not one. ......... I do not killfile, nor have I joined any do-not-call lists. |

Yes, because they are more dangerous than non-ABS brakes. You used the term reliable when talking about an "American made" car. |

So why doesn't Acura offer non-ABS I think the issue here is that all these 'anti' people are all expert drivers. They've never made even a slight error while driving and of course, never will. They would never hit the brakes in a panic when something happens nearly instantly to the extent that the logical brain can't respond and it becomes just a reflex to hit the brake pedal. For the rest of we less than perfect people, my little Honda does have ABS and I sort of like it. I've really only had it turn on once or twice when popping on the brakes to avoid a dump truck making a quick lane change in the rain... I think it's likely the ABS kept me from sliding and losing it sideways or such. The reason I read that ABS 'didn't work' wasn't that it didn't work technically, but that the pulsing of the brake pedal caused people to let off the brake when you're supposed to just stand on it and let the ABS do it's job. I actually didn't feel anything in the pedal when I set mine off, but I did hear it. And people... exchanging ideas or debating features is fine, but all the name calling just seriously weakens whatever idea you're trying to sell. -- George http://people.delphiforums.com/gmcc |

And they're all wrong of course. Few people are quite as perfect as they think. :-) -- George http://people.delphiforums.com/gmcc |
