Go with the Focus ZX3 or ZX5. ZX3 used are VERY cheap.

You get what you pay for. How many recalls does the Focus have
currently?
I'd hazard a guess that since inception, it's double digits. Run from
this car. Fast.

Recalls do not mean tat the car is not reliable. As long as you can see a
car largely sold in fleets over years, you can assume that it is fairly
reliable... at least until 35000 miles. The Focus is on Car&driver 10Best
since 2000. There is no reason to run away. But I would not buy them new;
they depreciate too much.
