The really funny thing about the riceboys is that they have a hard time understanding the basic physics of front wheel drive cars. They can't figure out why they take their 400hp NOx Civics to the drags and keep getting beat by old air-cooled VW bugs! |

The only VW bug I ever encountered that went very fast had a Porche engine in it. Are you mabe indulging in a little hyperbole there? What was the 1/4 mile time for that bug? |

A quick google produced the Web-Cam (camshafts, not cameras) site with some comparative stats: http://www.webcamshafts.com/winners.html A quick browse down the list shows a CRX with a 10.37 which is supposedly a multiple world record. Lower down we see a street legal VW bug with a 10.06, and still further down we see a pro street CRX with a 10.68. A pro street car really an all-out race car, often with tube frames and running alcohol. They generally run slicks. There are a number of VW bugs running in the 10s on street-legal DOT tires. Here are three: http://quicksitebuilder.cnet.com/vin...ance/id13.html You just can't beat the traction of RWD! George |

The original post doesn't say anything about drag racing. Other then the 4
wheel drives, I wonder which car would be the favored for the autocross racing? Having 60 percent of the weight on the front wheels generally leads to relatively benign understeer while having 70 percent of the weight on the rear wheels of the bugs yields rather amazing oversteer. A sharp driver can handle that, but a typical driver of "modern" cars will get a 360 degree view of the racecourse. The rear weight bias of the bug is great in straight-line performance, but it can be a handicap in the corners. Most of the coffee-can-exhaust crowd seem to be more interested in the drag strip than in autocross, though. It's easy to find an open straightway in the city or a 24 hr coffee shop with a big parking lot. I suppose most of the rebel's are after the show. But, it would be nice if their was more courses available for the amateur enthusiast. Unlike the days of old, a rear drive V8 would cost some serious dollars. Cars packing V8 (or turbo) power would be necessary in order to give the rear drive the advantage on the drag strip. In the more affordable lightweight scene, the rear drives doesn't seem to have a big advantage over the front drive in the straight away. E.g the 240SX is no longer in production... I've heard rumors that GM might bring back an affordable rear drive configuration which definitely would be a novelty for all the youngsters who haven't had the opportunity to grown-up on rear drives.
