Default 1996 Civic A/C Unit

Hi all:

I have a 96 Civic LX 5 speed sedan and I am moving down to the South
so I want to install an A/C. I brought the car to a local honda dealer
and was told that the car model is too old and they weren't able to
locate a unit for me (the unit costs around 850 bucks and labor is an
additional 250, within my budget so to speak as I don't want to
replace this car). They said that maybe I could find one somewhere
though they don't know where. If I could get one, they would be able
to install it for me. I tried the internet (including EBay), without
much luck, and I wonder if anyone would know where I likely can find a
whole unit.

Thanks much,

fc

There are places selling after market A/C kits. I do not know how good
they are. Check out http://www.ackits.com. J C Whitney also has A/C
kits, but not for the 96 civic.

It cost less than that when I had it installed on my 97 Civic HX. Are
you sure it can't be special ordered from Honda?

Thanks, I was thinking that maybe a junkyard would be one possible
solution, though I'd prefer to have to worry less about the quality of
the unit.

I tried two honda dealers and both of them told me that they weren't
able to find a unit. I suppose that the car is a bit old...

Well OEM replacement parts are available, but it might expensive to put
together a system this way. Check here:

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...A5MT&catcgry5=

You could check if there is a dealer install system kit available and if
they could get it for you. You also might have better with a southern
dealer.

Just this past Friday I checked for an A/C Kit for my del Sol, which appears
to be identical to the Civic's. The folks at www.hondaautomotiveparts.com
emailed me back saying that A/C Kits for '94, '95 and '96 model years have
been discontinued by Honda (I didn't ask about other model years). I also
called a local Honda repair shop and he confirmed that they are
discontinued. :-(

The complete installation instructions for your model, along with a parts
list showing all part numbers, are available online at
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/.../17561_01.html,
so I was going to install it myself and then get it charged at a local shop
that does A/C service.

Good luck finding a unit...let us know if you find somebody who has some in
stock. :-)

Default A/C installation [was 1996 Civic A/C Unit]

Did David K a stately USENET-post decree:

David,
Did you get to install the a/c at all. Can you tell me how it went ? I
am planning on installing a/c on my '92 Civic Si (which did not come with an
a/c).
The kit is listed in hondaautomotiveparts site, how easy/hard it is to
do it on our own. I also have Haynes factory service manual, I have the
inclination to learn too. But the most I have done on my car is change
oil/filter, and repair the power mirror.
Browsing through newsgroup, I also saw that the '92 a/c uses R12. Will
the kit sold by hondaautomotiveparts still use it, or be upgraded to match new
laws ?
Thanks.
