If the car is running , the water pump is running faster so more coolant is
being circulated. Check to see if the electric fan is running at all.

Since the AC fan is behind the radiator it may be drawing air through the
rad thus cooling the car, based on your obervations.

You can put 12 volts to the fan to see if the fan is faulty. Be careful..

Both of the fans work. If I let the car sit idle, the temp gauge climbs up
to about 2/3 above C and then the fans kick in. Temp gauge then drops back
down to the 1/2 mark. If I turn the AC on, both of the fans also turn on.
