My 1996 Honda Accord EX 4 cyl with 114,000 miles and auto transmission is
running well. However, the gear shift makes a grinding sound when going from
Park to Drive. The transmission appears to be find but does the gear
shifter need WD-40?

How would I lubricate this area? Not much room to get in there.

yikes, first make sure you have enough transmission oil (check under
the hood)
and that there isnt a leak.

my cousin ruined his transmission unit by driving the car while there
was ZERO transmission oil in it (it had a leak). Cost him about £800
UK pounds to replace

You cannot drive an auto transmission with no oil. The oil pressure is used
to shift gears, no oil - no shifting.
It is still a good idea to check your transmission oil from time to time
though.

thanks for the correction,
my cousin said he drove it and just herd a grinding noise then that was that
