Default burn / loose auto trans fluid

2000 civic LX. Fluid never needed to be topped up. It was changed after two
years in 3/02, then again in 3/04. At each change there was no noticeable
lose of fluid during the preceding 2 years. It was checked on 11/22/04 and
showed no lose. Then on 12/26/04 it was checked and the stick was dry. The
car was level. It was topped up at this time and has shown no signs of lose
since.

Any ideas what's up?

thanks,
paul
