Default A Replacement key ?

I've a 03 CR - V LX

I want to buy another key but the dealers want around $90 for them ! I have
a key presently just want a spare so I can have a key in ignition and lock
doors when I tow behind my motorhome.
Any other choices ?

I had the same problem. I went to a store that specializes in keys and was
told that I had to buy it from the Honda dealership since there was a
computer chip under the plastic. He said that if he made me a key, that my
car would not start since it did NOT have the necessary computer chip.

To do that, all you need to do is to have a key cut. You don't need the chip
programmed, the dealer should do that for you for the regular charge of
cutting the key.

Ever since my daughter drove off with my keys in her pocket stranding me at
a gas station 200 miles from home, I carry a spare from Home Depot ($2)
that will open the doors. It won't start the car, but I leave the valet key
hidden in the car for that purpose.

You not only need the key with the chip cut it also has to be programmed in
the car along with all other keys. Try several other dealers. You may find
one cheaper...

Thanks for sharing this tip! What a nice way to solve the high price of
getting another key made: hide this inexpensive key outside and keep the
driving key inside! Al

You're key is definitely available at locksmiths who do automotive work.
It should not cost $90, substantially less. It also can be cloned
outside of the car, there is a machine that reads the programming of the
original key and copies it to the new key.

The other responders were correct in that to simply open the doors, you
don't need a programmable key, only a plain metal key. Since your key is
a sidewinder, I believe the aftermarket Ilco key might be the only choice.

Go to a good locksmith, they can service your needs.

Dealer charges an arm and a leg to program the keys (mine wanted $40 for the
key and $100 to program it, though the cost is the same to program 1, 2, 3
or more). If you have an existing one, the guys above, I got with
programming for about $60 for a 2001 accord.

The laser cut keys with the remotes in them may be different. Separate
remotes for the doors and trunk can be had on ebay and are easy to program.

Make sure these guys above have someone local to you to program the keys
before you buy.....
