My A/C in my honda 2002 civic SI really smell bad. That's not my first car
with a/c so i know what's a/c suppose to smell like. My mom has an honda
accord too, and doesnt smell like that..

Is this something normal? It only stinks when I turn it on, after a few
minutes, the smell goes away.

Also, is it possible to turn this anoying A/C turning on automaticly? I
know it's better to defrost windows, but ...

The drain tube under the evaporator is probably blocked and keeping the
condensation in the evaporator. This causes mold which is probably what you
are smelling. After opening the drain, under car at evaporator, check with
an auto parts store for a chemical to clean up the mold..

a/c is turned on with defrost so that the system gets use during winter
months, and the o-rings dont dry out

And to make for a more effective defroster - as the air gets cooled by the
evaporator, it loses the moisture in it, and then as it's warmed by the
heater core, it's able to hold more moisture, clearing the windows much
quicker....

Yes, it is possible. I found the procedure for the CR-V, perhaps the
Civic is similar.

To deactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob to panel only setting (next to max a/c).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting
car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops
flashing.

To reactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob all the way to the right (defrost position).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting
car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops
flashing.
7) After the 7 seconds described in step 6, the recirculation button
will
start to flash. Continue to hold the button for another 7 seconds. After
this, the a/c light will turn to green and it's finished!

Oufff, too much complicated. Sounds weird for a car that has only two
years.. : (

I'll try the lysol suggestion I had from another groups, if that doesnt
work, I'll send it to my honda dealer. It's still on warranty anyway!

Hehe, it did'nt work but did changed something. Now, it's still turnin on
automaticly, but can be turned off. Before, I could'nt turn it off!

Ive had this problem on my 99 since it was six months old. After bringing
the car in 5 times for this problem in its first year the dealer cleaned
the whole system out and sprayed something called "Fridgy Fresh" I hope I
spelled that right to clean the mold out. The dealer advised me there was
a bulletin on this very problem I was having they suggest the following

-Turn the compressor off at least 2 Blocks from your final destanation
and let the air dry the coils.

-Also for some reason they recomended to leave the air on recirculate mode
as opossed to pulling outside air.

Ive follwed what they recomended and it has helped alot on the mold
problem. Sucks turning the compressor off befor you get to were you go but
I can live with a lil heat then to smell that nasty mold smell when I
start the car.

I dunno were you can get Fridgy Fresh but I have used something in the
past called "Ozium" I highly recomend that as oposed to lysol.
