It all comes from the same dinosaur guts (unless you opt for synthetic). This is a religious topic. I doubt you will get a single answer to this question. |

As the car gets older (50+K miles) you can switch to different brand since
honda brand is expensive. --Viktor "apollos1943" <apollos1943@gawab.com> wrote in message news:7f642e28b59da85572b48a7f87d7f655@localhost.ta lkaboutautos.com... > Hey guys, > > What is the best engine oil for the accord sedan 2000 4 cylinders? > > Honda recommends their brnad of oil; but is there another product that is just as good ot better? > > apollos1943 > > |

Oil is defined by a standard which is constantly upgraded.
Current API Service rating was recently upgraded from SJ to SH and I think is now at SL. That is the first parameter. Back when oil was rated about SD or SE, some oils could not maintain viscosity at higher engine speeds. Only two brands back then were identified as meeting those requirements - Castrol and Exxon Uniflo. Today, all oils now have solved that problem. But it demonstrates that better brand names may exceed SL standards. Synthetic oil provides no advantage to cars (which is different from aviation) because synthetic still must be replaced at same frequency AND it uses smaller molecules to lubricate compared to conventional oil. apollos1943 wrote: > What is the best engine oil for the accord sedan 2000 4 cylinders? > > Honda recommends their brnad of oil; but is there another product that is just as good ot better? |

How long do you plan to keep the car? The 5w-20 Honda brand does cost a
little more, but it is also a very well crafted oil that gets great used oil analysis according to the folks at bobistheoilguy.com. You could buy a cheaper oil and save $5-8 an oil change, but could prove to be a real false economy if you intend to keep the ar for a while. Oil and filtre at the local Honda dealer here costs $28.88 (plus tax, of course). Doesn't matter whether you're using 10W30 or 5W20 or anything in between. -- Brian www.accesswave.ca/~orion |

You should talk to Mercedes, Porsche and Aston Martin. You could save them some money! |

Some of the new base oils are "Type II" or "Type III" - AKA "hydroisomerized" or "hydrocracked" petroleum oil. There's been some controversy over Castrol NA changing their motor oil from mostly PAO (Type IV) to a Type III base oil, and marketing it as "synthetic". <http://www.oilhelp.com/about.htm> Texaco Havoline motor oil was labelled as "Type II" during the Shell/Texaco joint venture (Equilon). Chevron called their base oil IsoSyn, which is a Type II base oil they used in Chevron Surpreme and Delo motor oils. I believe Chevron also patented the process. Since the Chevron/Texaco merger, they likely use the same formula in different color bottles. <http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/nafl/auto/content/promotions.shtm> |
