Default Re: Gear Ratio on 1st and Reverse

I found on quite a few manual transmission cars that the Reverse has a
higher gear ratio than 1st, and this makes it hard to back up a hill --
the engine is easy to die.

Anybody has any idea about why is that? I trust most people do not want
to back their cars out like 007.

Since you have only one reverse gear, having it somewhat higher than
first is a nice compromise. I usually back up faster in reverse than I
drive in first.

I use reverse to help me get out of snow. The automatic won't allow me to
start with 2nd gear. So a higher than 1st reverse gear is really helpful in
those situations.

Hehe, when I was learning to drive we use a 24-foot open bed truck with
5 forward gears. We always start in the 2nd gear and the intructor
wouldn't tell me what the 1st gear is for. Now I think that it is
probably reserved for starting with a real big heavy load, and may be
too sluggish for normal use.

Big heavy load, usually on an uphill grade.

I used to drive a big old international refridgerated truck when I was a
kid, loaded with milk.
