My 95 Honda Civic will not shift into 4th until I have traveled 10 miles or
so in cold weather. Any suggestions of how to solve this problem? Have
110,000 miles on car.

Automatic?
Same on my '91 Acura

When the weather gets cold, and the fluid is cold autos won't shift into
overdrive until the fluid or engine have reached a certain temperature. This
is normal.

Does the D4 light come on on the dash? I've seen the switch at the base of
the shift lever stop working right (especially when cold) on some Hondas and
Acuras, causing funny shifting.

My '95 Civic does the same thing as does my '94 4Runner.
Mechanic tells me this is very normal in order to get things
up to temp.

If you've checked the fluid level according to the manual, and CHANGED
the tranny fluid according to the maintenance schedule, then you need to
quantify the word 'cold'. It was -16F (-27C) here the other day, but our
CRV shifts into all it's gears within the first two minutes. The block
heater had been plugged in for an hour or two. We 'take it easy' for the
first while because it's a way to the main highway.

If you change the tranny fluid, use real Honda stuff. It will shift
smoother and it's worth it.

Just like other people stated. It doesn't shift so that the rpms stay
higher longer to warm up quicker reducing emissions.

The Toyota Camry specifies that in cold weather the top gear will not
engage until the engine is at normal operating temperature. This might
be the case on the Civic as well.
